After your tenth session, I ask that you take some time off from Rolfing to digest the work- usually one to three months or so. While it may sound wacky, people’s bodies will continue to change after the tenth session and you want to allow this to unfold. This happens primarily because while you’re walking around in the world with your new alignment, your muscles will be firing differently than they did before as they adjust to being used for what they were designed to do, rather than to do their job and all their neighbors’ jobs by way of perpetuating a compensatory pattern.

After that, people’s post-ten experiences vary a good deal. Some people have gotten in touch with me two years after their sessions to tell me that they haven’t called because they still feel great. Others will choose to see me on a somewhat regular basis- usually one session every four to eight weeks or so. Most frequently, people will come to see me for “tune-up” sessions. If they have a new injury or concern, or they feel their old pattern starting to wake up a little bit, they’ll call and either do a session here or there, or a shorter series of two or three sessions in weekly intervals. If I had to condense people’s experiences into a norm, I’d say most people see me for one to six tune-ups per year.

Still curious?:

I often have people ask me how I can know that everyone will feel better within exactly ten sessions, and I admit that the perception of, “In ten sessions you’ll be good as new!” frustrates me and comes off as yet more “5 steps to world peace” or “3 easy steps to riches” weirdness. It’s not a perfect prescription to cure everything that ails you. It’s more like an opportunity to dive deeply into a process for a period of time, rather than dipping your toes in or skimming the surface of things. There is a momentum that can be gained from the ten- or any process that you focus on and dive deeply into- where one session builds on the next and so on. Will you feel 100% better after ten? Maybe not. Will you feel 100% better for the rest of your life? Almost definitely not. We’re all still in the world and vulnerable to stress and injury which will affect the way we bind up in our physical body. However, by engaging in an in-depth ten series process, you’ll have gained a significantly new level of openness and balance in your body and a much greater relationship to your own health. But hey, better to hear it from the people who’ve worked with me.
